Ways of slicing/jointing techniques

The final aspect of the panel is mainly determined by the method of trimming and jointing the veneer. Jointing is the operation whereby the veneer leaves are spliced together by glue or glue thread to the size of the panel required.

Ways of slicing

Quarter cut Quarter cut
This is produced by cutting at right angles to the growth rings producing a straight grained effect
Crown cut Crown cut
This is produced by cutting a log in half and then slicing parallel to its centre to produce the crown or heart effect
Rotary cut Rotary cut
The log is rotatd around its axis against a knife as if unrolling a carpet. This produces a continuous sheet with sometimes very wild characteristics
Curls Curls
The texture and appearance of the wood is built by slicing a log where the branch splits in two. This veneer is highly decorative but is only available in relatively short lengths.
Burrs Burrs
A natural defect on the outside of the tree and/or its root. Characteristically there are small knots grouped closely together giving a highly decorative appearance. Mostly the veneer is rotary cut.
