An office is primarily a work place. In terms of furnishings, it’s therefore about using the space as efficiently as possible. But that doesn't mean it has to be boring. On the contrary, an office that scores high marks for ‘atmosphere and cosiness’ is also instantly good for productivity.

It has long been proven that a pleasant working environment does wonders for motivation. So anyone who’s about to furnish an office space or office building should take into account the aesthetics and appearance of the interior. Indeed, those who spend long days behind a desk prefer to do so in atmospheric surroundings. Very logical, but it’s sometimes overlooked.

How do you create a functional but cosy office space? An office building should, of course, be functional: easy to maintain, with plenty of light and the best use of available space. This includes good, preferably ergonomic chairs and energy-efficient but bright lighting.

So how do you get some cosiness at the same time into that ‘clean’ and mainly performance-oriented office space? You can put a planter here and there, of course, but it's better to take a more structural approach. It’s always ideal if you can combine efficiency and aesthetics. With smart and energy-efficient lighting fixtures, for instance, that also look good and give off a pleasant light. Or how about a seating area with a soft rug? Also, by covering a wall with veneer, you give the whole area a warm and natural touch that also adds a cosy feel to it all.

If you want to maximise homeliness, you could even go for wall-to-wall carpeting and – why not – a gas fireplace in the office. In any case, it’s important to strike a balance between work and atmosphere. A successful example is Lignum Europe’s new building in Kortrijk. Studio Benoit provided industrial-style furnishings combined with an unusual finish and original materials.

De Laere Decor's installers at Linum Europe, for example, also installed walls and ceilings with a finish in veneered, decorative slats. A slatted structure like this adds a warm, trendy touch to the office. Last but not least, they have a positive impact on the atmosphere and cosiness of open spaces, as they can ideally be used as room dividers as well.

Would you too like to create a cosy office interior?
